2015 Volunteer Recovery Trip
Four and a half years later, how is the coast faring from the 2011 earthquake and tsunami?
Here is a great chance to see and take part in the recovery of the Sanriku coast!
MAJET thinks that this is a great opportunity for everyone to give back to Miyagi.
Special thanks to Roger, our Matsushima CIR, for organizing this visit.

Minamisanriku Town and Rikuzentakata City are working to make foreign tourism part of their recovery. As part of the preparation to get their towns ready for foreign tourists, they really want candid feedback from Miyagi JETs regarding a variety of interesting activities. This visit is being heavily discounted to make it affordable for us. There will be opportunities to hear stories from locals about the disaster, volunteer with local farmers or fishermen (exact activity depends on the number of people who register), try quality local food, and otherwise see a side of Tohoku few non-locals ever get to experience.
Transportation: We will be arranging carpools to help people get to these towns and go between the towns.
If you are able to help drive let us know! If we don't have enough drivers, there's a bus from Sendai to Minamisanriku. Costs: In Rikuzentakata- lodging and activities are free courtesy of the city! Please pay for your own lunch and dinner on Saturday, and your own breakfast on Sunday. In Minami-Sanriku please choose where you would like to eat lunch. It is up to you to help your carpool driver with gas and tolls. The estimated cost is 5000-6000 yen for activities and food. There will be a possible bus transportation cost within Minami-Sanriku (estimated at 2000) |
