KARAKUWA 唐桑町

Welcome to the edge of the world, or Miyagi, anyway. Technically part of Kesennuma since the latest merger, the furthest point from Sendai is also one of the most beautiful, with lots of natural scenery and tourist attractions. The most famous on the 20km peninsular is O-Reishi, a 16 m tall marble column on the coast is a bit under-whelming when you look down on it from the cliff, but more impressive on the ferry tours. Two major shrines, at the tip of the finger of rock and one more in downtown Karakuwa are available to visit. Isaribi Park offers a fantastic view to drive up to, and an even better one to those who take the 15 minute hike to the top. 9-9 Sound Beach is isolated and sandy, and squeaks as you walk across it. And up in the northern part of the town, the Koharagi area offers the Dairiseki (white marble) Coast and Mt Sasanagane, the highest point in Karakuwa. Finish up your day at Gigi’s café, with an English menu. Come take the windy roads up to the Chinese Mulberry town and explore!
