Main Events

These are the main events we hold annually. Keep your schedules open!

Art & Culture Show

Picture

When?
Mid-July
Where? Downtown Sendai, Shimin Katsudo Support Center
What? An event during which Miyagi and Sendai JETs as well as other members of the Miyagi international community come together to express their artistic and musical talents! Meant to bring both international and Japanese residents together, the event focuses on sharing each others' cultures while communicating through the common language of art. The show includes an art exhibition as well as cultural workshops and musical performances!

Welcome Party

When? Mid-August, the weekend after Miyagi Orientation
Where? Varies year by year, but usually at an izakaya (Japanese style bar) near Sendai station
What? An event to welcome newcomer Miyagi and Sendai JETs! Wise JET souls commune to offer age-old advice to their new underlings, and we try to bridge the gap between country-bumpkin Miyagians and cosmopolitan Sendaiers. After a nomihodai (all-you-can-drink) type dinner at central location in Sendai, we keep the party going at karaoke!
Join at your own discretion.

Bandai Trip

Picture
When? October long weekend (Respect for the Aged Weekend)
Where? Bandai, Fukushima
What? A 3-day\2-night trip to Lake Hibarako, a beautiful spot under the shadow of Mt. Bandai. We stay in wooden cabins down by the lake and have full access to the site's bikes, kayaks, table tennis, barbeques, and sento. Some choose to climb Mt. Bandai, others prefer to check out the 5 Colored Lakes (let us know if you see all five colors), and there is even one of the world's largest collections of Dali sculpture and paintings a bike ride away at the Morohashi Museum of Modern Art! And of course you can always just relax by the lake with a nice book/beer/cigar/whatever you prefer!

Halloween Party

Picture
When? A weekend around October 31st
Where? Varies year by year, but we like the Yakurai Cottages in Kami Town - there is an onsen and wasabi farm nearby!
What? Your (fairly standard) (except much better) Halloween party, involving a costume contest, music, scary movies, etc.!

Thanksgiving Potluck

Picture
When? A weekend around Thanksgiving
Where? Ideally, a spacious house being rented by an ALT
What? A skilled cook among our numbers cooks up a turkey or two, everyone else brings other delicious comfort foods, and we settle in for a cozy and pleasant evening of eating, drinking, and socializing - creating a home away from home.

Sapporo Yuki Matsuri

Picture
When? Early February
Where? Sapporo, Hokkaido
What? We round everyone up for a ferry journey to Sapporo in order to see the magnificent Yuki Matsuri (or Snow Festival), which involves numerous scuptures made out of snow and ice (illuminated at night!) and ranging in size from modest to ginormous. There is much more to experience in Sapporo, of course, including the infamous lambyhoudai and crabbynoudai dinners, as well as day trips to Otaru and/or skiing/snowboarding destinations.

Pub/Izakaya Quiz(zes)

Picture
When? One or two times throughout the year
Where? A pub or an izakaya in Sendai
What? We put on a quiz/game show and have participating teams battle each other Jeopardy-style! (While enjoying drinks and food, of course.) Come show us how smart and knowledgeable you are!

Cherry Blossom Viewing

Picture

When? Sometime in April when the sakura bloom
Where? Usually at a park in Sendai (Tsutsujigaoka Park) or in Ogawara or BOTH!
What? Hanami is a beautiful Japanese tradition that basically involves going to a park with your friends/family/loved ones, claiming a spot of land for yourself, and consuming alcohol while admiring the ephemeral beauty of cherry blossoms!

Oshima Leavers Party

Picture
When? Late June or early July
Where? Oshima Island, up north in Kesennuma
What? Just as we welcome the new JETs at the beginning of every JET year, so do we say goodbye to those who leave every year. To allow everyone to enjoy the natural beauty of the more distant reaches of Miyagi, we usually camp overnight on Oshima Island. Swimming, barbeque dinner, natural wildlife, and much, much more! We prefer that what happens at Oshima stays at Oshima.

These are smaller events that we have held in the past, or are thinking to hold in the future. If you have any ideas for events, send us an e-mail at miyagi@ajet.net. Your idea could become the next great MAJET event!!!
